© Michelle Chan This past weekend I was fortunate enough to be able to attend a showing of the documentary, "The Chinese Exclusion Act," as a part of the LA Asian Pacific Film Festival in honor of it being AAPI Heritage Month. As a second generation Chinese American, much like most minorities in the U.S., my education in the public school system only allowed me to learn about history in a very linear manner, one that did not adequately reflect the challenges and experiences of minorities.

Can you teach an old dog new tricks? Real answer? YES! How do I know? Because I did it! Quite a few years ago, when I suggested my close friend train her 10+ year old dog to lay down, she said... "You can't teach an old dog new tricks." Original, right? I, on the other hand, took on the challenge. © Michelle Chan What a wonderful day it is for all to celebrate and honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.! His teachings and words have touched, and continue to touch, countless lives. He has led the way for people of all ethnicities to be closer to obtaining the unalienable rights that are promised in the United States' Declaration of Independence. However, it is unfortunate, and quite heart breaking, to see that some things have not changed for the better despite how much time has already passed. So many things that Martin Luther King Jr. have said still applies today. "I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
